About

Columbus in Cuba | Cuba in Columbus represents an unprecedented, multi-event, multi-venue group of exhibitions showcasing the work of artists from central Ohio and Cuba. Five Columbus artists are among the 200 international artists selected to show work in the renowned 13th Havana Biennial in Matanzas, Cuba, in April 2019. An additional 34 Columbus artists will show works alongside art from Cuban artists as part of a collateral Biennial exhibition, ConnectArt, in Matanzas, Cuba. In fall 2019, artwork from the 39 Columbus artists who exhibited in Cuba plus work from 15 Cuban artists will be on display at art institutions, galleries, and public venues throughout Columbus as part of an exhibition called Cuba in Columbus.

13th Havana Biennial in Matanzas Cuba
Dates: April 12 - May 12, 2019
Location: Matanzas, Cuba

Havana Biennial is Cuba’s largest visual arts event. More than 200 artists hailing from nearly 50 countries are expected to participate in this year’s 13th Havana Biennial. While the inaugural Biennial spotlighted artists of Latin America and the Caribbean, subsequent events have expanded to include artists from countries around the world. One of the guiding principles of the 13th Havana Biennial, with a general theme of “Construction of the Possible,” is to encourage interaction between artists, curators, experts and institutions. For the first time this year, the Biennial extends beyond the city of Havana. For 13th Havana Biennial in Matanzas Cuba, five Columbus artists will show work in Intermittent Rivers, an official Biennial art project from Artistic Director Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons.

ConnectArt in Cuba
Dates: April 12 - May 12, 2019
Location: Galeria-Taller Lolo in Matanzas, Cuba

ConnectArt is one of many collateral projects being held in conjunction with the 13th Havana Biennial in Matanzas Cuba. Cuban curator and artists Lolo Osmany Betancourt will host ConnectArt, an exhibition of Ohio and Cuban artists, in his gallery Galeria-Taller Lolo. The Central Ohio artists’ pieces are inspired by their own visits to Cuba on people-to-people group trips organized by Columbus curator Michael Reese, encouraging connections with Cuban artists. Travel from the U.S. to Cuba has been permitted through these people-to-people exchanges dedicated to fostering meaningful interaction with the Cuban people. Reese says, “the Cuban art that I'm drawn to tells a story… which started with the Stein Family Exhibition at the Grand Palais in 2011 in Paris, France. The artists told us all the details and the significance that the art conveyed when the works were created. I love the stories behind the art.”

Cuba in Columbus in Columbus
Date: October 1 - November 15, 2019
Location: art institutions, galleries and public venues across Columbus

Cuba in Columbus is the result of an organizational collaboration between visionary Cuban curator and artist Lolo Osmany Betancourt and Columbus curator Michael Reese. Reese accompanied several groups of artists on people-to-people trips to Cuba, where the artists fostered connections with Cuban artists. “It has been amazing to see the energy and the connections that have formed between the artists,” Reese says. Five Columbus artists have been selected to show works in the 13th Havana Biennial in Matanzas Cuba, the country’s largest visual arts event, and an additional 34 Central Ohio artists have been invited to show pieces alongside work from Cuban artists in ConnectArt, a collateral exhibit to the Biennial. For Cuba in Columbus, work from all 39 artists and 15 Cuban artists will be exhibited in the Columbus Museum of Art, Greater Columbus Arts Council’s office, Riffe Center, COSI, (not) Sheep Gallery, Brandt-Roberts Galleries, Hammond Harkins Galleries, Lindsay Gallery, Sharon Weiss Gallery, Sherrie Gallerie, and other art and business venues. Hilton Columbus Downtown will host the opening.
